Oral Surgeries: How Can a SleepSat Help Improve Outcomes

If you are using anesthesia in your practice, a SleepSat oximeter with SatScreen software can help you better prepare for surgeries and reduce the risk of serious postoperative complications.

You may have noticed a new "Risk Factors for Post-operative Adverse Events" section on page 2 of your SatScreen oximetry reports. Based on research by Frances Chung et al. (2014), thresholds for high risk are displayed to the right in red. These risk factors include:

  • An oxygen desaturation index of more than 28.5 (“ODI4 Events/hr”)

  • The cumulative time SpO2 is < 90% exceeds 7.2% of valid recording time (“CT <90% VRT”)

  • A mean SpO2 less than 92.7 (“Mean SpO2 %”)

To determine if a patient is at risk, have the patient use the SleepSat to obtain at least four hours of valid recording during sleep. After downloading the report, compare each of the results on the left to the high-risk reference. If one or more results exceed the high-risk reference, the patient is at an increased risk of adverse events, which may warrant additional monitoring or possible intervention.
